NOKOMAI MINING NOTES ETC.

4*. .. (Prom our own Correspondent."). Nothing new to report on mining in this quarter. A few scattered miners are at work here and there. On Paddy's Alley the .water has been limited till the late rains replenished the race 3. Mes3ra Hunter and Breen are extending their water race frSm their' dam to Long Gully, where they have an extended claim, of two acres. I hear that Messrs Cameron and McKinlay are going to. prospect for the cinnabar lode supposed to be at the head of the Nevis,i where any amount of loose cinnabar is to be found, together with a certain quantity of gold. . I wish them all success. The United States Hotel and general store, occupied by Mr A. Sangstar, was burnt doynrsoinetime between two and three o'clock last Saturday morning, nothing being saved with the exception of apw no and some trifling articles. The fire originated in the store, which is a stone building. I have not heard whether there is any insurance ; if not Mr Sangster must be a pretty heavy loser. Our local anglers have been out on the river, with very poor results, as the water is in anything but good form as yet on account of the late flood . liast year there were some comolaints "made by angjer3 visiting this quarter about the accommodation or rather the want of it ; but that is pretty wll rectified this year. Mr Gibson of Parrowa has built an addition to his house, and tells me that anglers stoppiug there will be driren in his trap to any part of the river and taken back again free of charge so long as the distance does not exceed six miles. At Athol Mr Reid has taken Mr Paddon's house, which was closed last year, and anglers will find accommodation there. Both places are convenient to the riyer. Today has been the coldest and most stormy day we have had for some time. A considerable quantity of gnow has fallen both on the .ranges and 1 Jq^-lying country, partipijlarly 'about the head wafers 'of the Jtataura aud Eyre n^ou'nta'uis, and lam afraid should there como a sudden thaw, which is not at all unlikely, there will bean-'ther big flood.
