[Copy urgent telegram from Dr MacCarthy.] Arrow, 17th March, 1883.— T0 Horace D. Monk' , Dunedin.— -Send large diarrhoea bottle, Duncan, Roxburgh,' through by coach Monday morning without f ail.— G. ' MacCarthy. ■■ ■ Rangiora, July 7, 1881/ ' Sib, — Having carefully examined your « Herbal Extract,' I find it.Jbo be a. skillfully, prepared vegetable preparation, possessing the properties of the plants from which it is .derived in a highly concentrated state, a fact AVhicb. I 1 have verified by evaporating a fluid diWJhm placed in a watchglass over a spirit , lamp'. On weighing the result,,* dark green extract, I found the weight to be 14£ grs. On farther submitting the extract to analysis I foirad it to be rich in tannin. In a large number of cases of ordinary diarrhoea, as well as in many chronic cas.es and in dysentery, I have proved it to possess great specific control, added to the inusual feature in a majority of dia*xhoea medicines, that it does not subsequently coristipate the bowels. I feel satisfied that from the number of trials , I have been enabled to make of it in a somewhatl extensive practice, it is a most valuable addition to modern therapeutics. The fol-> lowing cases are taken at random from my notebook :— Case No. 1 : Mrs — — , West Byerton, suffering for two years from chronic dysentery, which had reduced her almost to a skeleton, After a fortnight's trial not only had .the diarrhoea stopped, but she commenced eating, meat without pain, and the usual conepmitant vomiting, Jntwo months she tad gained 181bs. weight, Case No. 2 : A. G- — -,'" child aged 5 years. Fortnight diarrhoea. • 'Was 1 effectually cured on thethira day. Case No. 3 : A soldier who had contracted, dysentery in India, got;, a small tw6-<jmnce phial, and was well before he had rfriish;ed-half of it.— Caarles DeLacy MacCabthy, M.A.,' M.8., &c, Trinity College Dublin. : !i , .
