Per Press Association. Wellington, Sept 10. Mr M'Callum has finished his report on the dairy factories in the North Island He states their condition is by no means ,0 satisfactory as is desirable. Amongst the causes of financial failure are i.isudi deucy of capital at the commencement of the enterprise, unncccs tary expenditure on buildings and want of management. The principal drawback: to the poriect w.-rking of the establishments are irregularity of milk supplies, many of the sn opliers preferring to make butter on .heir account as the season advances and prices rise, and insufficient attention nivc-u by dairymen to tho cleanliness cf utensils and milking sheds. H« favors wnrkimr these factories on co-operative principles, all- M'Cailum recommi nds Government to reduce railway rates ;tps produce, and have specially construeUci trucks for its conveyance to ports.
