WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE. Per Press Association. Wanganui, May 24. The weather looked anything but tempting up to 12 o’clock this morning for the Steeplechase Meeting. Notwithstanding the threatening aspect of the weather, there must have been folly 2500 people on the course at the time the big Steeplechase was decided, the ladies contributing largely to the gathering. The course was not so heavy as might have been expected, after the heavy fall of rain during the last three or four days. The jumping, taking it all through, was very good, hut there were several spills. Messrs Hill and Poole put £2OOO through tlie machine,
Maiden Steeplechase of 60sovs. —Kangaroo, 1 ; Dick Turpin, 2 : Promotion, 3. Cairngorm was scratched, hut all the others ran. Kangaroo got the best of the start,
and won easily. Time, 9min 58see. Dividends, L2 5s and L2 3s.
Flying Stakes Handicap, of 50 sovs.—Rufus, 1; Rimu, 2; Marlborough 3. Escapade was scratched Rufus jumped away with the lead and maintained it throughout, winning comfortably. Time lmin 20sec. Dividends £l3 5s and £l4 11s.
Hack Flat Race, of 20 sovs— Corsair 1; The Dove 2, Jetsam 3. Cyclone and Peter also started. Time 2min lOsec, Dividends £2 2s and £2 6s.
Wanganui Handicap Steeplechase, of 200 sovs—Kangaroo, 1; Faugh-a-Ballagh, 2 : Tenganui, 3. Waitangi, Orangeman, Allegro, and Clarice started, Promotion being scratched, and a good start was effected. Allegro took the lead, but falling at the first jump, left Tenganui in the lead, followed by Waitangi, Orangemen, and Kangaroo. Going into the cricket ground Orangman fell, cutting his knees, and Clarice also fell, her rider (Potto) getting his arm broken and jaw hurt. After the water jump had been cleared Waitangi took the lead, hut soon fell, when Kangaroo came up and led to the finish. Time, 7min 46secs. Dividends, Ll2 15s and LlO 7s.
Winter Oats Handicap of 100 sovs —Marlborough, 1; Armourer, 2; Camomile, 3. The Gem, Rimu, Ruapehu, Escapade, Wanda and Rufus also started. Time, 2min 49,Vsecs. Dividends, L2 12s and L 3 15s. Hack Steeplechase of 20 sovs — Butcher Boy, 1; Madcap, 2. Five others started. Dividends, L 4 16s and L 7 10s. Cnnsolation Handicap Steeplechase of 20 sovs Allegro, 1; Orangeman, 2; Dick Turpin, 3. Clarice also started. Dividends, L2 12s and L2 16.
