RE RABBIT AND LABOR QUESTION.
TO TIIE EDITOIt. Sir,—C'omiug up the East Coast from Kaikoura to Blenheim, I noticed a great number of rabbi-s, also a great number oi men in search of work. Now, 1, as one of the maDy who are ae.king a livelihood nnder the present retrenchment system, sufferin,’ under the last Government’s Immigration Act, on coming to a stution aud asking for a job, have flatly been told, “ We don’t allow rabbitera on our slation,” Flaxbourne, to wit. How is it the Government are so hard on the runholders in the North Island ? Did the runholders in this district puraue the name courie as those in the Wairarapa district have clone, there would never have been the number of rabbits that now exist in this district. Rabbits are more numerous now than when the Act was most in force. The runs are mostly controlled by the bank; the bank-is under Government. Left hand into right the country is being impoverished, employing no means to destroy them. Round the Awatere there is one run that allows men to kill. Now, there is a living for hundreds would those in authority only ullow the wandering many to camp and destroy this pest. What has become of all our Inspectors? If I, amongst the many, ever needed their aid, Ido so now. lam only one amongst many,—l am, &c., Wayfarer.
