A Sad Case.
Per Press Association. Auckland, May 1. A sad case of destitution came before the Police Court to-day, when a man named Arthur Svvete was charged, with stealing a hook from the Public Library.
The evidence showed that accused came to the police station last night with a book in his hand, and stated he had stolen it in order that he might be sent to gaol, where he would g"t food and shelter. He had .recsiitlv onus from Dunedin, and had bjneo hi i-riv-ii hi Auckland been unable to obtain o;n:>i wm-ut. Accused had not eaten food for sor n ., days. Mr Baddeley, who was on tho bench, sympathised with the unfortunate man, but said he should have applied for relief. A sentence of six months’ hard labor, was.imposed.
