ARRIVALS. Jan 22—Nil DEPAETUB.ES. Jan 22—Nil The ketch Amateur, whilst being towed out of Eoxton River on Friday, got ashore on tho south spit, and is likely to become a total wreck. The crew landed safely A fortnight ago a message was cabled from Sydney to the effect that the s.s. Rotomahana, while on her voyage to that port from Auckland, had carried-on her bows tho body of a shark for 08 miles. That message was slightly sensational, hut falls very short and tame of the record on the log-book of that fast and favorite steamer, which runs as follows; —“At 1 p.m. on the 29th December, when off Cape Maria Van Diernan, a slight shook was felt by some of tbo crew, but no notice was taken of it at the time. In the afternoon an immense number of large sharks were seen around tho ship. Next evening at 7 o’clock one of the men noticed a large body fixed across the ship’s stein. The engines were at once stopped, and the body proved to be that of an immense shark, which had apparently been struck by the 1 ■ i;-, and kept in it.* position by her progress through tho vater, for on the vessel stepping it dropp id off and floated astern. It would seem, therefore, to have remained in that position for a distance of about 380 miles.”
