Stack is one of the local champions of Freetradc, and wrote to Bright on the subject, who in his reply says :—“ Ignorance and selfishness are iu partnership in defence of what is called Protection, and the question arises in the country aqft community, for there are yet many ignorant, and all may be stirred and reached by an appeal to their selfishness, After 40 years of Freetrade, and attended with prodigious suceess, wo have some Protectionists here who call themselves Freetraders. They rather shun the old name, for’they lnpw jt to be unpopular, but the real object is the same as we had to contend with so long ago. I hope yon will follow the course of the Old Country and New South Wales, which I am sure is the go'U-se of real prosperity and wisdom,”
