Jan 19 —Penguin, ss, 442 tons, Stott, from Wellington and South DEPARTURE Jan 19 —Ponguin, ss, 442 tons, Stott, for Nelson The French warship Fahert, which will shortly visit Wellington, is described by the Melbourne Age as a cruiser of the second class. The vessel is powerfully armed, and carries eight heavy steel rifled breach-loading guns, four Hotchkiss and two field guns. The Fabert is a wooden vessel, and similar in type to the Duchaffant, which has visited the Australian waters on more than one occasion. She is sharp at both ends, and of the eight guns previously mentioned two are used as bow and stem chasers respectively. The vessel carries a complement, all told, of 218 officers and men, M. Bonier being in command. After visiting Now Zealand, sho will return to New Caledonia. Our readers will remember some weeks ago that a sensational story went the rounds of the press, referring to the find on the sea-beach near Freemantlo of an albatross having round its neck a collar of tin, in which wore punched words in French to the effect that shipwrecked sailors were awaiting rescue on the Crozot Islands. This collar of tin has since been exhibited in Melbourne, and does not, we tbink, bear on it the impress of truth or genuineness. Captain Brown, of the Ulloch, barque, just arrived at Sydney from Hamburg, reports that he passed unusually close to those islands on his way out, being only six miles away ; ho was thus enabled to make, through his '•a s, a most minute examination of Pos- ; • ion and East Island, but without dis- ■ . i ing anybody or anything to betoken ti ■ presence of human beings. —N.Z.
