London, Dec 26. > At a largely attended banquet givon by colonists to Mr Justin McCarthy, tie stated tliat the Earl of Carnarvon had accepted Mr Parnell’s scheme for Home Rule for Ireland. The Marquis of Salisbury said that the Earl of Carnarvon was at present absent in Australia, but until the statement was justified he would be convinced that it was without foundation. Mr M‘Carthy replied, that the Earl of Carnarvon was a man of honor, and would certainly not disclaim the statement. Lord Randolph Churchill was on the point of re-entering the Cabinet when he renewed his demands for the expulsion from the Ministry of Viscount Cross and the promotion of Mr W. H. Smith. The Marquis of Salisbury refused to agree to the proposed course, and it is thought that the object of Lord Randolph Churchill’s visit to Russia is with a view of embarrassing the Marquis of Salisbury. The Right Rev J. Moore, Bishop of Ballarat, has had a private audience with the Pope, at which he presented the address from the Catholics resident in Victoria. Accompanying the address were 1000 Ballarat sovereigns, quartz specimens, and silver groups, representing Australian flora, fauna, and aboriginal life. His Holiness, in reply, said he was pleased at the progress of religion in Ballarat. Ho commended their generosity in support of religion, education, and their offerings to the Pontificate. A general strike lias been ordered of tho employes on the Philadelphia Reading Railway, in consequence of tho owners employing non-Unionists. The strike will affect 65,000 men.
