Mr Bates, a member of Vernon’s cricket team met with a severe accident yesterday whilst playing in a match on the Melbourne ground. Bates while in the act of bowling was struck over tho eye by a ball hit by Mr Newham, who was practising on the West not. Tho doctors are hopeful that Mr Batos’ sight is not permanently injured.
