Sir John Hall and other members have to-day been interviewing Sir Julius Vogel -with a view to yetting him to withdraw tne motions of which he had promised to give notice of but the cx-Colonial Treasurer it appears has quite made up his mind to bring them forward. CHIEF MENTION. The Government are willing to rc-ap-point a Committee for the encouragement of local industries. No action will bo taken this session in the direction of a Bill providing for the public advances on land as suggested by the late Mr Macandrew. Tho Government have definitely decided not to alter the route of the North Island Trunk Line, and the matter will be traversed in the Financial Statement. Mr Moss will to-morrow ask the Government if during the recess they will appoint a Royal Commission b> fake evidence ns to the best means of revising the tari V in the direction of encouraging local industries. Tho Premier has stated that tho Uoverninent disagree with the system of taking a show of hands at nominations for the position of M. 1f.1t., and a Bill abolishing it will be introduced. Mr Samuel V’ailo, of railway reform fame, wishes the Government to delay the Appointment of non-political Boards till his scheme has h id a trial. Tho Government propose to introduce a Bill to legalise the expenditure by Mi nip'pal bodies disallowed by the Auditor General on account of its being technically illegal, though not unpopular. Mr White to-day presented a petition in f ivor of the Catholic school claims. Mr Peacock is enquiring of the Go 1 , eminent if they think the amendment of the B inkrupb'V Act necessary. (formerly Private Secretary to Mr BalliHK'o) who, while leaving the Government service to iimWtuke n I r vuto position, received a compensation allowance, seems to have the idea that a grievous wrong has been inflicted in the matter, which lie again brought before the House to-day. lie spoke in very strong terms of the affair, which lie termed a scandal on the service, and he also made very grave charges against the late Native Minister arid Mr Lewis. lie stated that air Balhince was aware when lie left that Mr Lewis was going lo a situation in rmpier, and mentioned that Mr Lewis senr., when a document came before him in reference to the matter, in a guileless fit vie certified that his son’s services might be dispensed with, in order that he might go to a warmer climate. Mr Ballance explained what ho had done in the matter, and Mr Mitchclson corroborated it, and expressed an opinion that there was nothing improper about, it. It was then suggested to Mr Monk that he should apologise to the gentleman named by him, but this he refused to do, and stated that ho believed there was more in it than appeared on tho surface. A discussion of a rather animated nature, which gave ostensible friends of the working men an opportunity to air their eloquence, took place this afternoon on the question asked by Mr Valentine as to whether, on the Waimoa line in Otago, a lad had been engaged at a wage of -Is Gd a day to replace a man who had been receiving Gs Gd. In reply, the Minister of Public Works stated in effect that were possible boys would he put on in cases where there was only boy’s work to he done. This brought on a very strong protest from a number of opposition speakers, who objected to the system of taking on boys to do men’s work, and so throwing married men out of work ; but on the other side the Premier and Messrs Fergus and Fisher assured the llouso that it was not the intention to cut down wages in any way, hut simply to run the railways on strict commercial principles.
