BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Counoil was held last evening. Present—His Worship,the Mayor, and Councillors Jellyman, Sinclair, Parker, McArtney, Riley, Douslin, Ching, and Houldsworth, TENDERS. The following tenders were received. • For raising Dunbesth-street : A. Cameron LlO (accepted), R. Register LI2 10s, W. Atwood L2O. : HOSPITAL BOARD. | Resolved, on the motion of His Worship the Mayor, that the Council meet at J 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 24tb November, . to elect four members to represent the , Council on the Hospital and Charitable i Aid Board. THE IMPOUNDER. ’ Thomas Maxted asked permission to f put on a fit person to do the impounding. 1 He had taken legal advice and was informed he could employ anyone he liked ! to perform the work. Cr Jellyman moved and Cr Houlds--5 worth seconded—That the letter be ac- ) knowledged and that Mr Maxted be in--5 formed th-»t the Council will hold Mr , Maxted responsible for the proper per- > formance of the duties. Cr Riley thought Mr Maxted should \ have informed the Council what particular ; persons he intended to employ ; the j public would be placed in a false position if Mr Maxted were allowed to appoint , whom and as many as he pleased, and ‘ perhaps make frequent changes. He suggested that the words “ providing the names of those appointed by Mr Maxted j be submitted to the Town Clerk.” Cr McArtney suggested that the names ' be submitted to the Council as the ' Council was responsible. ' The motion was amended in the man- | ner suggested by Cr Riley and carried. , TRANSFER OF LAND, From E. G. Walsh offering to transfer a pieoe of land to the Council if they > would erect and paint a paling fence I along his front sections. Resolved—That Mr Walsh’s offer bs accepted, subject to the approval of a sub-committee, consisting of His Worship 1 the Mayor and Crs Douslin and Parker, now appointed to investigate the subject, RIVER ENCROACHMENT. From Gerald Fitzg raid, on behalf of Mrs Budge, drawing the attention of the Council to the fact that some willows had been cut down or had fallen into the river at the back of Mr Powick’s house in Nelson street, thus partly closing one span of the bridge and forcing the water to the opposite bank. On the motion of Cr Parker the letter was ordered to be Bent on to the River Board. M'lntyre Testimonial. A circular was received from the Secretary of the MHntyre Testimonial Fund, with a subscription list, asking for subscriptions to the fund being raised in recognition of Dr MTntyre’s fearless conduct in connection with the Hall poisoning case, Resolved—That the letter be acknowledged and the subscription list lie on the table. street watering. His Worship made a statement to the effect that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the Manager of the gas works for supplying water for the street watering cart. The action of the Mayor was confirmed. section 28. His Worship stated that he had seen the Minister for Lands, with reference to acquiring the control of the section above r named, adjoining the Cemetery, so that people might be prevented from carting away gravel from the Taylor bed. The Minister had seen the force of this and had suggested that an application should be made by the Council to get this land vested in the Council. His Worship therefore moved that such application be made.—Carried. ARREARS OF RATES. Cr Houldsworth moved that the Town Clerk summon twenty rate defaulters every Monday. Seconded by Cr MoArtney and carried. st. Andrew’s st. Cr Parker moved : That specifications be prepared and tender* called for forming St. Andrew’s-street from the eastern boundary of section 51 to Wellington Road and thence to Beaver-street.
