Per Press Association. Feilding, Nov. 19. John Derby, settler, Bunnythrope, was killed this morning while bush falling. Hawera, Nov 19. A man named J. D. M'Lean, carpenter, was arrested tins morning on a charge of being in possession of a gun wilh an unlawful intent. He presented the gun at Iredale, a L*rmer,"last evening, hut then said he had made a mistake and that it was a brother of Iredale’s for whom he was looking, and that when he found him he would shoot him. He makes charges against Iredale in connection with his wife. He jwas remanded till Wednesday. Auckland, Nov. 19. Mr Thompson, formerly licensee of the Duke of Edinburgh Cast e hotel, jumped overboard the ferry steamer while crossing the Harbor but was rescued, Wellington, Nov, 19. A man named James Nicholson, who was thrown out of a buggy at Masterton, has succumbed to the injuries then received. Auckland, Nov. 19 John Vaughan, owner of the Mntiwai claim, Coromandel, died after three days’ illness, it is believed from the fumes of dynamite. An inquest is to lie held. Christchurch, Nov. 19. Two fires occurred in the country districts to-day. Some sparks from an engine ignited a stack of linseed straw on the premises of the late Linseed Oil Co at Rangiorai Several stacks belonging to Messrs Nieholls and J. Johnson, and a portion of a building belonging to A. J. Carmichel were destroyed. Tho damage done amounted to about LIOO. The building was insured for L7-j in the Standard Office. The stables attached to the Leeston Hotel were destroyad by lire to-day, but the hotel was saved with difficulty. The stables were insured for L2OO in the South British Office. Dunedin, Nov. 19. Samuel Callon, a man employed as stoker on an engine working at the Otago Heads, was to-day charged at the police court with giving tobacco to a prisoner, contrary to section 33 of “ The Prisons Act.” The gaoler said a quantity of tobacco had been found in possession of a prisoner, but they had been hitherto unable to discover how it was obtained. Accujed admitted the charge and the R.M said that, although it was a first offence, it could not be dealt with lightly, and inflicted a fine of L 5. A further charge against the accused of conveying a letter from one of the prisoners was dismissed on a technical ground.
