THE MAYORALTY.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, —The Express seems to take it for granted that there will only be Messrs Henderson and Djuslin as candidates for the office of Mayor this year. If this is so, I feel sure a large number of the voters will be disappointed, as I think the actions of neither of those gentlemen meet with the approval of the ratepayers, for the extravagance of the Council during the past two years has been marvellous, and if Mr Douglin Is elected no doubt we shall have more of his wild schemes, such as a tramway from the Taylor to bring gravel, a fountain in Market . Place, innumerable embankments to prevent the water in time of flood getting away, more loans for useless unnecessary works (like borrowing LIOCO to build a bridge over the Omaka, then, af er the loan is obtained, find out the money will not be required for some years), a loan for repairs to roads and footpaths which should come out of current revenue ; and now look nt the wretched state of our streets and footpaths. They are worse now thanthey have been for many years, and when the streets are. repaired, the water courses are blocked up, the roads turned into a lake and stoues put on that large that one might as well walk over a rough river bed. I hope gone candidate will present himself who has some practical common sense and au idea of economy.—Yours, &c., RATEPAYER. [Our eorrespondpnt will see from an announcement elsewhere that such an one as he indicates is ,f out.” —Ed, M D.T.] _____
