An attempt was made last night to fire the house occupied by Mr W. J, Livingstone in Palmer Street. A quantity ol greasy rags were placed under the joists ef the hous<\ Fortunately *ho fire was discovered in au incipieut stage and cx'iuguithed. The police have a theory as to the reason why the place was set on fRe, but for obvious reasons refuse to make it public at present. The home is owned by Mr Fitchett aud is said to be uninsured. The furniture ir insured.

A.t a public meeting of citizens it was resolved to hold the lire brigade demonstiation in Dunedin in February next year, and a committee was appointed lo arrange matters connected thereto. A fire broke out above the draper’s shop of C. Nunu, George street, this evening, but was extinguished before much damage was done. The place is believed to he insured, but the owner is away in the country aud the amount was not ascertained.
