With respect to the Inspector of Nuisances’ letter, re the decaying fish nuisance down Waikawa-read, it was pointed out tint the Council were not responsible in the matter, and that the officer should know the law. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge receipt of the letier. The application from L. B. Jones, asking permission to re-shingle the brewiry was granted. The Town Clerk stated that the Football Club had refused to meet the Council, or contribute towards the expence of forming the Recreation Ground, Waikawa Road Cr Dart proposed, and the Mayor seconded —That the Football Club be prohibited from playing on Nelson Square. This involved considerable discussion. The Mayor wished that the schoolboys should be excepted. With this addition the resolution was eairied excluding the Football Club, Moonlighters and others. Several contracts in Waikawa Road, High streef, and Dublin streets were ordered to be let, and the footpaths in High street metalled to London Quay. An attempt to metal the footpath in Wellington stree, from Dublin street, to Broadway, was not entertained. The watertabLs in Broadway were ordered to be cleaned from High street to Kent street, and a small drain put in near York street. Cr Price proposed—That From Wairau road to Fredirick’s Bridge be metalled with rock metal. The Mayor and other Councillors op* posed the motion. Resolved— That certain work be done near tho Cemetery and Mr Howes’ residence, and that wattling be done from Mr Buckley’s to the flume in Kent stree ; and that a cutting be made in Taranaki str. e from Broadway fo Waikawa road ; that wattling be done from Mr Bennington's to the corner at Mr Gilchrist’s; that metalling be done as far as High street. Cr France moved That the proposed painting of lampposts and Council Chamber be postponed. Cr Swede again proposed, and Cr France seconded —That tbs footpaths in Wellington street be metalled from Durham street to the boundary. The Mayor proposed amt Cr Dart seconded, as an amendment—That it be not done, as a great deal hud been expended on that street. On the amendment being put Cr Dart voted “ Aye.” and as no otlie.i Councillor cried “No” the Mayor declared amidst much laughter, that the amendment was carried. IV Price propose I, and flu Mayor seconded—That a Coimnittro of the whole Council meet and inspect a low place on the river bank near Mr Ksson’s, which might give way in heavy flood.—Carried. CEMETERY"BOARD. The minutes of last nicetiug were read and confirmed. Tenders were received as follows : For fencing and leasing (for seven years, the unused portian of the Cemetery . —Mr Clemens offered to fence and improve the same for tho use of it, and to erect a fence wttliin six months; Mr S. S. Hood, L 3 per annum, and to fence it in a substantial manner. The Mayor moved, and Cr Dart sec- , onded—That Mr Clemens offer be ac* cepted, subject to bis complying with tire wish of the Council with regard to the fencing. Cr Somervill proposed, arid Cr Price seeended, as an arnendmeut—That fresh tenders ne called for. Carried. Proposed and carried—That the Inspector bo authorised to have the trees presented to the Board planted. The members then dispersed.
