An application from Frederick Thomas for a renewal of the Wairau Accommo la ion House license was granted on condition that the present house is suitably improved within three months, and that a new one is built by the next annual meeting. The sixth of the series of weekly penny readings now being held in the Picton Sohoo'room took place on Tuesday night, the chair being taken by A. P. Seymour, Esq. A most attractive programme had been provided and the room was so crowded that several persons were unable to find seats. The entertainment was opened by a part song “ Sweet Home,’ very nicely suug by the school choir Mr Harris followed with a reading “ The Co riser pt.” which was thoroughly appreciat'd by the audience. Miss L. Webstpr sang Bishop’s beautiful ballad, “ Home, Sweet Hone”—a song that will never grow old—and at the conclusion wa< greeted with hearty applause. Mr G. W. White followed with a reading, •' The Fear of Life," and Miss Allen gave a good rendering of "The Harp that once through Tara’s Halls.” Mr A, P. Seymour’s reading, “ Natural History Anecdotes,” proved very interesting. The duet, •‘Break, break, break!” was nicely sung by Misses J. Duncan and E. Ham's, and' a reading by Mr Harris, and an American cradle song by the the school choir brought an enjoyable Evening to a conclusion. The object of these weekly entertainments, adding to the school library fund, is a most praiseworthy one, and we are gla 1 that they are so well supported. Each of the audience is expected to contribute the sum of one peony, but larger sums are thaokfu'ly receive!. A meeting of the Picton B trough Licensing Committee was held in Picton i n Monday, there heing present —Messrs T. GaPoway, (Chairman) J. France, J. R. Gard, Jackson, and \V. Dart. The report of the Inspector was read and the character of all the licensed hmses was reported good. Licenses were granted to Messrs C A. Gxiirey for (lie George Hotel and Brace for the Terminus Hotel. Renewals were granted to the Pier, Slop, and Clarendon Hotels with an extension of hours in all cases until 11 o’clock, except for the Clarendon, for which an ordinary license was granted. On the same d»y the Commit'ee for the Licensing District of Picton held a meeting, when application was made by Mr E. J. Murphy, for a publican’s license for the Tua Marina Hotel. Petitions were presented to the Committee for and against granting the license, that in support bearing 43 signatures, mostly residents of Tua Marina, and that against, containing 17 signatures, mostly from outside the the locality.
