[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, June 7. A man named James Mclntyre was stabbed at Paikakariki this afternoon by a man named Matthew Johnston. It appears that the latter had just gone up th-* country and was suffering from the effects of drink when a dispute arose, and he stabbed Mclntyre with the sharp end of a candlestick used in tunnels, inflicting , eight or niue wounds which are not believed to be very serious. Mclntyre was brought into the hospital and Johnston to the lock-up. An adjourned meeting of persons desirous of going to Kimberley was held to-night. Very little enthusiasm was shown and it \vas decided that any of those wishing to go should pay half their passage money at once, and the balance in a day or two It is not expected that there will be any great response. A well attended meeting of citizens was held this evening o consider whether the funds required for Hospital and Charitable Aid should bs raised by voluntary contributions or by rate. Sir Robert Stout presided and delivered a long address cn the subject. The following resolution moved by the Mayor was carried:—"That in the opinion of this meeting it would not be the credit of the citizens of Wellington to have a rate struck for the eupport of the Hospital and charitable institutions of the city, and that an organised effort be made to raise the sum required by other means” A second resolution was pissed appointing a committee to devise means for raising the Decessnry fuuds. The sitting of the Court of Appeal terminated to-day, their Honors having sat for exactly a month. The Court sat for the last time this morning, when judgment was given in three cases, Injhe suit ot Thompson v, Friedlauder, a motion fer a new trial, their Honors set aside the verdict of the Court below, and allowed the appellant the costs of the previous action. In the case of Jacob Joseph v. Wellington Harbour Board and Plimmer, Reeves and Company v. Wellington Harbor Board, the Court held that plaintiffs were only entitled to nominal damages for 10.-s by the removal of Plimmer’a wharf. Costs on (he lowest sca'e were allowed the Harbour Board, and leave was given to plaintiff to appeal to the Privy Council’s judgment. In the cases of Davy v. Mudgway and Te Itaihi and others v, Grice and other's were defeired until the 26th of July. . The Dunedin Corporation have wired to Governknent asking them to pay claims in connection with the recent blasting ncei lent, amounting to LIO 000, and Councillor Robin, of Dunedin, lias arrived and had an interview with Ministers. Stewart Rsid, insurance agent, the Official Assignee said the statement showed that the debtor’s personal expenditure had been at the rate of L7o<> a year, and for the pa-t three years he had been going to thebad at the rate oi L4OO per annum. Since the return of Captain Webb, the American Consul, from the Bay of Islands, he has received a telegram from Mr Stephenson, Consular-Agent at the Bay, stating that men of the whaling barque Petrel, arrested there, made a very strong statement on osth, alleging that cruelties were practised oo the emper, which hastened if they were not the cause of his death. The telegram also states that other witnesses have given evidence relative to the circumstances attending the cooper’s death,but does not give any further indication a 3 to the character of this evidence. ' Pending the enquiry, Captain Webb has thought it advisable to employ counsel in order that everything connected with the matter may be thoroughly sifted, and Mr Campbell, of the firm of Russell and Campbell, leaves for the Biy to-night. The written charges which were formally laid by the men before the Consul consisted in the allegation of blows and threats against themselves. They laid no other charge, hut in the course of the investigation one of the witnesses stated that the captain of the whaler flatly denied this, and also produced a letter which he said had been amoug the da ceased’s effects, directed to some woman in New Bedford. The letter is dated 5 or 6 weeks after the vessel left New Bedford, and is signed with initials only. It spoke of having a pleasant voyage so far, and mentioned the officers favorably. The captain of the whaler also stated that he had had the cooper examined by the British Medical Officer at Phayal, where he had called,and that the Dr certificated that the man was liable to attacks of insanity. Captain Weba has given instructions to Stephenson when he has taken the whole of the depositioos to forward them with his report to Auckland. A seaman of the Petrel, Hardy Appleton, of Canada, is in the Auckland Hospital suffering fsem poiaoning. He corroborates the statements as to illusago of - the
