BOROUGH SCHOOL CONCERT.

The concert giyen in Ewart’s FfaM last evening was very sceoessful, the building being filled to overflowing, many bei 'g unable to find seats, though several chairs and forms were brought into requisition. The singing of the juveniles, though the music was in a somewhat high key for their voices in some parts, reflected oredit on Mr J. P. Lucas and his assistants, and the proceedings pasre l ofi without a hitch. Owing to pressure on our space we are unable to give a lengthy account of the performance. Songs were given by Misses C. Wernyss, Miss L, Horne, Mi-s M. E. Normauby, Masters W. Green, H. Ching, Master C. Carter; while duets were sung by Miss J. Simson and Master 8. Hudson, Miss B. Mason and Mas'■ r C. Carter, Miss C. Wernyss and Ma-ter O. Chittenden Master 0. Cqwtpr gave, in costume, a very good rendering of the '* Pa.vder Monkey,” with a chorus, An encore, was loudly demanded, and he repeated the last verse with even far better success. The hackneyed though pleasing chorus “The Gendarmes’’ (from ‘'Genevieve de B abmt”), by eight boy scholars, proved the most erjoyable item on the programme. The manner in which they went through ihcir diiliiug would put some of the Blenheim recruits in the shade, the various evolutions being given with such excellent precision that the

beys fairly brought down the lion e, an undeniable encore following. Toe choruses given by quite a host of youngsters were sung in good time and effect. When the first part of the pro gramme had been concluded Mr J. Lucis stated that Mr Radcliffe, the eminent (Jurist, would kindly favor tho 3) present with a flute solo, an announcement that was received with cheers. This artist then gave the ever-welcon.e solo, “ Home, Sweet Horne,” with variations, and showed those present what the (lute is capable of, the tone, phrasing, and tcclinii/ue being a'ike perfect. His performance wis beyond all mere expressions of praise, as lie raised bis instrument to the highest dignity of which it is capable. His playing served to show what a music il treat'is in store for those who patronise the Oddfellows’ Hall this and to-morrow evenings. The accompaniment was played by Mr G. Clutson, the pianist of Mr RauclifFo’s Company. 4 lie concert was conceded with Broad’s cantata, “Bed Riding Hood's Rescue,” the various characters being allotted as fo lows: —‘-Red Riding Hood)” M-ss Lily l’ulconor ; “ Mother,” Miss M. B Normanby ; “ Buttercup,” Mi-s A. Mason ; “ Rose,” Miss ,T. Sitnson ; “Woodman,” Master W. Gtilii In ; “ Wolf,” Mas er G. Carter ; Robin.” Master S, Hodson; Semi-chorus, by some little girls attired in blue. This part of the entertainment was better carried out than the first portion, the pupils seeming to enter into the spiiit of the affiir with much greater zest. The proceeds will no doubt largely augment the School Prize Fund. Mr J. P- Lucas besides acting as conductor accompanied on the pianoforte aud gave every satisfaction.
