AMATEUR ATHLETICS

INTEREST IN WAIKATO With a view to enabling more Waikato people to see champion amateur athletes in actiona meeting is .to be held at Morrinsville this week to form a Morrinsville group of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Club. - r ’ '- v " :• '

It is stated that there has never been an amateur athletic sports meeting at Morrinsville, , although professional sports and picnic sports have beenv held from time to time. The rules of amateur athletics do not permit members of amateur clubs to compete at professional or unregistered sports meetings, so that in the past Morrinsville has not had the opportunity of seeing amateur champion runners and cyclists in action.

The lack of an amateur athletic club at Morrinsville has been forcibly brought to the notice of residents recently through the success of two Morrinsville athletes, Miss I. Campbell and A. Fagan, in winning championships as members of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Club, which is the nearest club to Morrinsville. Recently there have been many inquiries made as tQ whether Miss Campbell will be making an appearance on the running track in Morrinsville. It is not surprising that support has been offered from all directions for a proposal to form a Morrinsville group of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Club with a view to holding an amateur meeting on the new Morrinsville sports ground, probably in January.
