MADELEINE CARROLL INTRODUCES NEW HAIR STYLE

The “browndtte” hair craze has died a natural death in Hollywood, but there’s always something new under the sun in the film capitol and this time it’s “blue hair.” The first feminine star to wear this exotic crowning glory is Madeleine Oarroll. Miss Carroll brought the idea with her from London and taught her Hollywood hairdresser the tricky method of applying a blue-purple rinse to her blonde locks. It isn’t as easy as it sounds, but when correctly applied gives such a striking and unusual effect that Miss Carroll, as well as her hairdresser, has been kept busy explaining the process ‘to everyone from colour photography experts to rival Stars,.'who are so anxious to learn the trick that they’ll sacrifice their vanity and ask questions.

Not so long ago, a blue rinse, launched for grey or white-haired ladies, proved a tremendous success, especially for evening. But this newer and more complicated “blue ; hair” is made-to-order for the . young, sophisticated blonde who can blend an ethereal quality in her worldiness.

Black Crepe For evening events, Travis Banton is making Carole Bombard a black crepe dinner gown and is using the new “double” width material which a famous fabric maker is .featuring this season. The gown has a “pencil-slim” silhouette and features one of Banton’s most successful arts—drapery. The bodice, as well as the skirt, is intricately draped but managed so that the slimness of the gown is outstanding. For dining, Miss Lombard will wear a daring straw hat unadorned and unrelieved as is the dress itself. A Microbe Helps Once upon a time a microbe was hanging around Broadway looking for a nice warm place to rest. The microbe spied an attractive young lady and flew right into her throat and set up light housekeeping in one of her tonsils. The young lady was studying to be a concert singer, but when her throat became infected, she had to give up her ambition. She accepted a small dramatic role in a Broad-

way play, then another and another, and finally on to Hollywood, where she turned out to be the charming Claudette Colbert.
