SOUTH AUCKLAND CLUBS Centre Annual Meeting There was a large representation ~si bowling clubs at the annual meet- - ing of the South Auckland j Bowling Centre, held at Hamilton on Thursday, including Messrs. W. Egan and A. Stewart (Matamata), W. Hetherington and A. G. Yardley (Morrinsville), A. Adams and F. Livingstone (Walton), G. Stewart (Te Poi), H. Conder (Hinuera) and M. St. J. Pax-, ton (Putaruru). Before the officers were elected the meeting was adjourned to allow .all the delegates to attend the funeral service of the late Mr. Colin Speight, who was president of the Olaudelands Bowling Club. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. P. H. Rowe; vicepresidents, Messrs. W. W. Maingay and E. W. Towser; secretary, Mr. C. W. Wycherley; treasurer, Mr. C. G. -Speight; committee, Messrs. S. Lewis (Cambridge), T. Waring (Taupiri), W. Franklyn (Waihi), M. St. J. Paxton'(Putprurh), P. T. North .(Te •' Awfiirtutu),’ W. -B; Pomeroy (Hamilton) ; sub - management committee, Messrs.! Rowe, Wycherley and Pomeroy; ..selection committee, Messrs. G. J., T. North and W. W. Maingay. Hardley Shield Selection The methods adopted by the centre in choosing Hardley Shield teams were questioned by Mr. Yardley, who considered that'the teams should be selected directly by the selection committee instead of by means of club nominations. The speaker said that when the competition was started individual players were selected and that they deemed it an honour to represent their centre in this important fixture. He doubted whether, now that clubs were asked to* nominate a rink, the players valued’ selection, but rather thought they were obliging the centre by playing. Reference was made to the difficulty experienced in obtaining the , eight rinks required, and while no ( action was taken by the meeting to change the methods of selection Mr. Rowe urged players to respond to , the invitation to players who were available for selection to put their . names on their clubs’ boards. I . . t j . Centre Tournament j 1 4 -l ' ■ i• v-"' - v- J- j i Mr. Rowe said the committee had Considered 'various schemes for improving the centre tourhhmeht and I ' had 'submitted: them to' the clubs’ for < consideration. -It had- never been sug- j gested that > the dates of ' the Te" ■ /Aroha tournament - would be takeji i ths centre' figure, opposition / could be*considered as f, somewhat' premature. In the past ?) little interest had been evinced by , clubs outside Hamilton, and in order , to obtain fully-representative entries t it was suggested that sectional play t should be decided among the clubs, j the section winners or the qualifying - rinks meeting to decide the finals. Te Aroha had always had January C 1 and 2 as tournament dates, but their entries had been light, and if the new scheme were applied the 1 dub would have much to gain in the 1 1 way of added interest and lessened 1 trophy expense. In addition every < club would be able to play the centre tournament on good holiday dates, i No club would be affected by the s playing of the finals on one central ( green on January 29. “ My club has held these dates for 33. years, and while we are anxious , to help the centre we wish to retain ] them, as we feel sure that with improved conditions our club tournament will prove a marked success,” said the president of the Te Aroha club, Mr. Dingwall, who added that a return to the rotor system of conducting the centre tournament might be advisable. 1 Powers of Centre .. Mr. M. St. J. Paxton pointed out / that the full bowling calendar was Controlled by the centre, and the dates-for tournaments were allocated annually and not for a period of years. In choosing any holiday date for the tournament the centre would not interfere with any of the clubs under its control. As for the statement made that the executive was afraid to tackle tournament dates, the speaker said definitely that he was afraid of nothing in this direction. / Mr. C. W. Wycherley explained I that in Auckland and Taranaki tournaments on all holiday dates were controlled by the centres and not by the individual clubs. Mr. W. W. Maingay expressed the opinion that the centre had been run by the clubs. The question now arose

as to whether the original centre date of January 29 should be adhered to. Supporting the general principles of the scheme, several delegates suggested that the sectional play should take place among the clubs bn Saturdays during January, but it was considered that this step would i reduce' ithe tournaments to the level . .of an ordinary competition, in addi- : r tion to closing the-club‘ greens to .. non-tournament players. 1 An amendment proposed by Mr. . Yardley, that the centre tournament . should be held on the usual dates on . the rotor system, was lost by 14 votes to 16, together with a motion , favouring the establishment of sectional play among the clubs on dates to be. arranged themselves before the finals on January 29. Finally, on the motion of Mr. Maingay, it was decided to hold the centre tournament at Hamilton on January 29. MATAMATA CLUB Annual Meeting Sound Financial Position 1 • ■ • • -. j
