COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT

WORKS IN HAND Applications for Grants The engineer’s report submitted to the June meeting of the Matamata County Council on Friday stated that the work on the Pairere washout on No. 18 main highway was practically completed, although it would be some time before the new ; formation settled down. Shortly after, the commencement of the woik a seam of treacherous pug and streams were encountered. These gave more trouble than was anticipated, and it was necessary to divert traffic through a neighbouring property while timber and heavy traffic vehicles ’ were diverted by Horahora and Buckland roads. The Pairere bridge on the Horahora road was now almost beyond repair. Temporary repairs were being effected and plans were being prepared •for a new structure. Estimates submitted to the Mair Highways Board for the current year’s work other than norma maintenance and works already ir hand included the Ngutuwera bridg<

and further sealing of No. 19 mam highway south of Lichfield, sealing the . Manga whero and - Waihou deviations on No. 20 main highway, sealing through the Hinuera Valley and improvements to the Waihou bridge approaches, and sealing of the Waitoa deviations and Pairere bridge. In view of the probability of No. 18 main highway being taken over by the board, no fresh proposals for this route were submitted. The board had under consideration proposals in which the council was unlikely to have any interest financially. . It was understood that the Government intended to carry out roadworks on the Wawa road and the ' southern end of the No. 19 main s highway to cater for timber mill traffic. As full details were not known the extent of the council’s interest could not be stated. 1 Applications for Public Works De partment grants for the curreni ‘ year included the following items:— 1 Rebuilding the Hungahunga bridge : Mowbray road; extension of the for--1 mation on Dukeson’s road; metalling J the gap in the old Taupo road; re- * placing bridges on Morgan’s road; formation and metalling McNab’s road; metalling one mile of the Taoj taoroa. road; and metalling 92 chains ; of Mangawhero road south. These items totalled £3200, which it was anticipated would be cut down tc £2IOO, from which the council would be required to select items totalling more than £I6OO. Other items on I the list but which were proposed as I Government relief works were: —Te Whetu and Ngatira roads, Waotu south load and Lichfield-Waotu (or Wiltsdown) road. French Pass, Te Miro and Muirhead roads were already in hand as relief works.
