PIAKO COUNTY GENERAL RATE

INCREASE IN TWO RIDINGS A general rate of lid in the £ for the year 1936-1937 for all ridings except Tahuna was agreed to by the Piako County Council at its May meeting. For Tahuna an increase of id in the £, making 18d, was decided on. The Te Aroha riding rate has been increased by id to bring it into line with rates in adjoining ridings. Cr. J. M. Stewart (Tahuna) said he regretted having to raise his general rate, but rates were not being collected from Maori land, and the riding would now be faced with the additional cost of maintaining two miles of the new access road to the Crown block at Hoe-o-tainui, and four miles of Waiti road, without any increase in revenue from properties on these roads. The Crown block was in the Morrinsville riding. The clerk said the extra id would poduce £IOO more. “I get everyone to pay who can pay in the Tahuna riding,” the clerk said to Cr. Stewart. “ The riding income was £IOSO last year, and you'struck only £BOO general rates." -■ The hospital rate remains at id In ■the £.: >.V: -. V- -v?
