SPRINGDALE SPORTS

BOXING DAY OUTING About 4000 People Attend Close Finishes in Most Events Once again the Springdale Sports Club worthily upheld its reputation established over many years for giving the public a splendid outing on Boxing Day. For the crowd of about 4000 people present at the Springdale Domain there was never a dull moment from 11 a.m., when the children’s faces started, until 4 ■ p.m., when the final track and chopping events were contested.

All the fun of the fair was provided on the ground. For those who were not attracted by athletic contests in the oval, there was Highland and national dancing in progress throughout the day, and the presence of a merry-go-round and several sideshows proved a great attraction for the children.

Springdale’s banked cycling track was in splendid order, a fact which reflects credit on club members who have devoted so much time to preparing for sports day. The oval track and the straight for sprint running events probably compares favourably with any grass tracks in New Zealand. To cater for the spectators the committee had left nothing wanting. An up-to-date public address system, with Mir. W. Howard, former prominent athlete, as announcer, kept the public informed as to the starters in each event, and gave a commentary from • start .to finish, besides, providing musicalritems and news of sporting events in Auckland.* The refreshment stalls 'conducted by members and lady helpers did good business, and there was an abundant supply of free hot water and milk for family nicnic parties.

Efficient Management A strong* force of experienced: club officials, headed by the president (Mr. E. Johansen), who was here, there and everywhere., welcoming -visitors' and supervising the management,, ran the meeting as if by clockwork. Thei'e was no delay and no confusion, every event starting on time, so that the many family parties who were due home to milk were able to see the final events and yet not be late. Among those who did great work but saw little of the sports were the secretary, Mr. H. A. Wagstaff, and his assistants, Messrs. D. Johnson, A. Fletcher and B. E. Johansen. On the track everything went smoothly under the direction of the starter, Mr. N. J. McNeill, who was assisted by Messrs. C. White and D. Malcolm as track stewards. The judges of running and cycling events were Messrs. F. Rae, L. Bailey, A. Fagan and E. Williams; the timekeeper, Mr. W. Nesbit; and the handicapper, Mr. C. A. Tonkin, of Auckland. The track events were under the watchful eyes of two referees, Messrs. H. Lawrence, of Otorohanga, and C. George, of Te Aroha. As starter of the chopping events, Mr. E. Palliser had the assistance of a hard-working committee comprising Messrs. H. Bridgman, A. Hunger,, junr., J. Little, N, Mitchell, W. Ryan, W. Price and A. White. The judge was Mr. R. Love, and Mr. C. L. Hardy, of Auckland, the handicapper, acted as timekeeper.

Novelty Cycle Event

A novelty event that appealed to the people was the cycle team race of li miles for teams of three riders. Points were allotted for riding in each lap after the first, so that a rider could score points for his team without winning a lap. The winning team was D. Kingsford (Waihi), J. Whitten (Auckland) and E. Wilson (Whakatane), with 17 points, Kingsford scoring the maximum points in each lap and all the points for„ his team. The second ' team scored eight points and the third team seven points. . 0 ■* <** During the aftemodW'*" thb- presj| j dent introduced M(P. ffo-t-1 Waikato;/ w|io: ’the v Sports Club on , the " continued success of its "sports,.meetings, and wished all present a happy and prosperous New Year. u
