SUCCESS OF MISSES BEVERLEY At Wanganui and Wellington Misses Nessie and Margaret Beverley, of Matamata, played in the North Island and New Zealand tenmis championships at Wanganui and Wellington, respectively, during- the holidays, with considerable success. North Island Champions
At Wanganui,'Miss Nessie Beverley won the singles , championship, and with her sister won the ladies’ doubles champiohship. Partnered by N. G. Sturt, Miss Beverley also annexed the combined championship. The Misses Beverley played good tennis throughout as they played off in the final' of the .singles, this being Margaret’s first essay in senior grade big match play. In the doubles the Beverley sisters scored an easy win in the final, beating Mrs. C. Smith and Miss T. Greaves, of Wanganui, 6—l, 6—4. The strong driving of Margaret and the positional play of Nessie put them in a class by themselves.

Second Round.—Miss M. Beverley lost to Miss M. Howe, 6—2, 4—6, 5 10; Miss N. Beverley beat Mrs. D. G. France, 6 —2, 6 —l. ; Third Round. —Miss N. Beverley beat Miss J Ramsay, 6 —C, 6—4. Semi-final. —Miss N. Beverley beat Miss T. Poole, 6—3, 5—7, 6—3, and will meet Miss D. Nicholls in the final. Ladies’ Doubles Second Round—Misses ,M. Beverley and Cooke lost to Misses I. and T. Poole, 5—7, I—6 ; Misses D. Nicholls and N. Beverley beat Miss Macassey and Mrs. Latham, 6—2, 6 Semi-final. —Misses D. Nicholls and N. Beverley beat Mesdames Adams and France, 6 —o, 6—l. Combined Doubles. —S. Hooper and Miss M. Beverley lost to D. G. France and Mrs. France, 3 —6, 3 —6. In future Misses N. and M. Beverley intend to play together in all women’s doubles. On this occasion Miss N. Beverley played with Miss Nicholls in order to defend her title.
