MATAMATA QUEEN CARNIVAL

CENTRAL ZONE EFFORT Successful Matamata Function The launching of the central 1 zone effort towards the Bedford Park Queen Carnival Fund was successfully accomplished in the Matamata Town Hall on Monday* when five candidates for election as zone queen made their debut. The candidates were: Miss Dorothy Chilton, Miss Ella Johnston, Miss Gwen Jones, Miss May Tims and Miss Mona Watson. Organiser’s Remarks In an introductory speech Father Silk, who acted as organiser of the function, made pleasing reference to the fine sportsmanship of the five young ladies who readily came forward to help in the worthy cause of making Bedford Park a modern sports ground. The speaker paid a splendid tribute to the generosity of the Bowler Bros, in donating the ground to the district, and impressed that it was up to the people of the district to recognise this by equipping the area. In this work the Matamata Rugby Union had spent £6OO for football, and now. it was the turn of cricket to get the ground made suitable for that game. Those in charge were alive to their responsibilities, and it was up to all to rally round and give support. Very shortly an international cricket team from England would visit Matamata and he hoped this would be the first of many such visits. It would be if the support was forthcoming. Matamdta would thus be a centre for international matches in the Waikato. The trustees of the park were determined to make the ground suitable for such matches, and to this end had organised a. monster queen carnival, through which it was hoped to raise £IOOO. This carnival proper would start on March 1 and end on May 31. That evening’s entertainment was only a preliminary, and whoever was chosen as queen would receive the support of all the other candidates’ committees and the two runners-up would act as her ladies-in-waiting.
