DISPLAY BY CHILDREN

ENTHUSIASM EVOKED Gymnastics and Dancing At the conclusion of the loyal addresses the parade of children was moved off in. orderly fashion to a pegged flank as a preliminary to the commencement of very fine displays by each section. These displays evoked much enthusiasm from among those present, this being dicated by the many laudatory comments and spontaneous applause which frequently burst forth. The first item was a gymnastic display by the Matamata and Te Poi Rovers and Scouts under DistrictCommissioner F. G. Southon and Mr. A. H. Turtle, respectively. These two troops performed a series of evolutions on two sets of parallel bars which compelled admiration and showed very careful training by the scoutmaster and his assistants. It was a splendid exhibition of the healthy training undergone by members of these troops. The next item was a display by the four houses—Huia, Tui, Kotare and Kiwi—of the Matamata District High School. In a ball competition

Kiwi proved fairly easy winners. In the next- competition, Kiwi once more showed their superiority in handling a basketball by winning easily. The third item, this time by the boys, was a relay race, and Kiwi again scored after being well behind. A junior medley relay race created great amusement, and this time Kiwi had to acknowledge defeat by Kotare. The next to give a display were the Girl Guides who showed praisewprthy speed and co-operation in erecting a flagpole. The time taken was *two minutes 10 seconds. Iff their next display the girls, again under Mrs. J. W. Burley, captain, showed remarkable dexterity in performing various movements with yard long sticks. This item was very well received. ; The Brownies followed* and under ■ Miss Simpson and Mrs. .R. Long performed various maypole dances in a dainty and pretty mariner. The lightness of foot and rhythmof these little girls drew warm applause as they performed their evolutions and as they danced off the parade ground. This concluded the display by the children, and it is safe to say that right from the oldest Rover down to 1 .the tiniest Brownie, the perform- | ances given were not only very outi standing, but were a source of pride | to all -of the adults attending, who ! could not help but be thrilled by the exhibition of physical fitness and' discipline given by. all off the participants. v About this time the Matamata Volunteer Fire Bridgade, under Superintendent A. H. Stewart, gave

a wet display in front of. the park. The popularity of this item with the younger section was quickly noted, for on the announcement being made there was a general exodus of children to the park gates. Here, from the nearest hydrant, members of the brigade went through various time exercises, the speed and precision of which drew unstinted admiration from all witnesses. .The events were a two-man wet coupling run; a '-0 three-man coupling run; and a§j throe-man disabled event. ‘ >
