NEW GOLF COURSE

OPENED ON SATURDAY Progress of Matamata Club The official opening 6f the Mataunata Golf Club’s new links at 'Okauia took place last , Saturday 'afternoon under ideal weather conditions. There was an exceptionally 'large attendance of golfers and Vriends.

The links, which have only been under construction during the last few months, were in a surprisingly good condition, and Mr. ;F. Under wood is to be congratulated in this respect. As was to be expected the grass on one or two fairways was on the long, side, but as the course is nolv heavily stocked with sheep this disadvantage will soon disappear. The greens, which are much larger than the usual country greens, have not yet developed a good sole of grass, but it will not be long before a good putting surface is obtained.

Ninety-two players, representing Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Walton, Rotorua and Okoroire Golf Clubs, competed in a mixed foursome over nine holes, the best gross and nett scores being returned by Saxon and Miss Ella Johnston, 47 — ili, 35£.

The president, Mr. B. C. Taylor, presented the trophies at the conclusion of the day’s play. v

• • NOTES ' Mr. Redhead, noted golf architect, who planned the Okauia course, was present at the opening, and in conversation with the committee members of the Matamata lClub, expressed the opinion that in a few years’ time the links would compare favourably with any course' in the province.

The third hole, 170 yards, on the banks of the Waihou river, has been named “ The Cabin,” on account of a small hut which is situated on the far edge of the green. A great shot was played at this hole on Monday, when S. Fernley holed out in one—not in the cup, but down the chimney. We have not yet heard how he played his second shot.

A medal competition was played on Monday, when few good cards were handed in, players. losing many strokes on the _ greens. The best car:ls were: C. Edwards, 108— 30, 78; .H. Keeley, 94—11, 83; K. Dods, 109—24, $5.

The men’s standard scratch score has been fixed at 74, and . several players have had to have their handicaps extended one stroke. This applies to those. with handicaps of between, six and ten.
