RICHMOND DOWNS SETTLERS
PROPOSED ROAD Petition to the Minister The proposed road to give access towards Matamata to settlers in the Richmond Downs district, which has occupied the attention of the Piako and Matamata County Councils for some months, was mentioned again at Monday's meeting of the Piako County Council, when a petition, signed by 27 ratepayers, was produced and read to councillors. The petition asked the Minister of Public Works to consider the construction of the short portion of road necessary to link up the Piakoiti Valley road, which is in the Piako County, with the road system in the Matamata County. Cr. McLean explained that the engineer had got the ratepayers in both the Piako and Matamata Counties to sign, including the Matamata ratepayers through whose land the road passed. Of course, the ratepayers who signed the petition were not pledging themselves to anything.
On the motion of Crs. McLean and Johnson, it was decided to send the petition on to the Minister with the backing of the council.
