MOTTO (Sent by “Bluebird.”) Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. OUR RAILWAYS Dear Girls and Boys,— Did you see the illustration of the new railway engine which was published on your -page recently? I think all the readers admired it and were proud that suchi a powerful and magnificent machine could be made in New' Zealand. It has immense jpeed, too, though of course, owing to the narrow-gauge lines, it will be seldom that it will be allowed to attain its maximum. Probably you have noticed how the railways of New Zealand are improving. Some of you remember the, old carriages where we had to sit in long rows. These are all rapidly being dispensed with for cars, with chair seats, >which are all to be steam-heated in the course of time; so that those who have to travel to high school will get there and home again with warm feet and quite comfy. V Kiwi remembers when a railway
journey was not much to look forward to except if there was a picnic at the other end. But now our own Railways Department is anxious to get boys and girls and grown-ups to “ travel by rail in comfort and safety.” Would any of my friends like to write an essay on “ A journey in a train.” They may write under a pen-name or their own. What a wealth of material there is: smiling homesteads, rushing streams, splendid bush, distant hills—sometimes with waterfalls—green fields, horses, cattle and sheep gamboling, and perhaps nicest of all, wee lambs! Now, how many have been on a train lately and what did they notice?— Love to all from KIWI.
