LICHFIELD VvS > 1 First Birthday Celebrated The Lichfield Women’s Institute celebrated its first anniversary recently. The function took the form of a social afternoon in the hall. Visitors were present from Matamata and Hinuera.

Two competitions were held. Miss N. Sneddon recited. Musical items and community singing were en-

joyed. The local president (Mrs. Gallagher), the visitors. The Matamata president replied. At afternoon tea time pride of place was given to the birthday cake with its one candle. Miss Kells cut the cake. Social chat concluded the function.

MORRINSVILLE The July meeting of the Morrinsville Women’s Institute was held last week in the Parish Hall. Mrs. Welch presided over about 50 members, which was a satisfactory attendance considering the cold weather. A few new members were enrolled. The roll call was “ Quaint Sayings,” and some particularly-quaiut ones were quoted, causing much amusement. The president. and four other members reported on a visit to the Lyceum Club at Hamilton on July 10 to receive the shield which the Morrinsville Institute won at the recent Waikato Winter Show for the best institute court. The institute was warmly, congratulated on carrying off this hohour for the second year in succession. This success is gratifying to Morrinsville members, particularly those who worked so hard in arranging the court at the show. Special mention is due to Mesdames N. D. Chapman, H. F. McConnell and P. Petry, for their task was an arduous one. A cordial invitation was received for all Morrinsville members who, could do so to attend the Motumaoho Institute’s meeting on Wednesday, and it has been arranged for a bus to go from Morrinsville. A further, invitation was received for the Walton Institute’s “ husbands’ evening ”

on Thursday. An appeal from the Mayor’s Relief Committee was read asking the institute to help the district's unemployed by way of sewing and donations of garments, boots, etc. This request was put to the meeting and approved unanimously. An interesting and instructive talk on flowers and their likes and dislikes .to certain climates and soils was given by Mr. R. A. S. Browne. Bodies with fine illustrations were passed around. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Browne for his genial and helpful talk. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Holcroft, Boles and Heatley. The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

WAITOA The July meeting of th Waitoa Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, when the president, Mrs. W. A. Fleming, presided over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song, and the minutes were read by the new secretary, Mrs. W. Luxton. A demonstration of pastry making given by Mrs. Le Gallais, of Tatuanui, was watched with much keenness by the ladies. A competition for the best plate of pikelets was won by Mrs. Maclean, with Mrs. Hyde second. A further competition for the best article made from old felt hats was won by Mrs. Garner, with Mrs. Sowter second. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Walker, Ashton, Keay, Craig, Gilliland and Forster. The thought for the month was:— ‘ If 1 do my share and you do your share, The sun will keep on shining; But if I leave .my share, or you leave your share, ’T’will cause distress and pining; And of all the things men most despise ’Tis whining, whining, whining.”
