MODEL DAIRY FARM.

IN TIRAU DISTRICT.

Ideal Milking Slied Arrangements.

About forty farmers made a visit to Mr. F. Rose’s farm at Tirau on Wednesday, July 27, and witnessed an interesting demonstration of a new steam steriliser. Later the farm appointments were inspected.

In the demonstration of the steriliser a lead of copper pipe was taken from the plant to the milk pipe at the far end of the shed, and when the steam came through at the other end of the milk pipe—a distance of 145 feet —a thermometer was placed at the end of the milk pipe and it registered between 2ID and 211 degrees of steam —quite a wonderful performance. Another interesting feature was a lead taken from the copper pipe to the milk vat whereby the cream could be heated by steam to the correct temperature for separating purposes. A very important item that claimed the attention of those present was the small amount of fuel used. The fire box: was stoked at 12.30 p.m. and it was not touch until 4 p.m.

A very novel and unusual appointment on this farm was the flower garden in front of the shed. In the spring this should bring' forth a glorious amount of colouring. It must certainly be appreciated by the cows, even if their extra production is not appreciated by the farmers in Old England. What struck the eye was the cleanliness of the shed and surroundings. Mr. Rose has installed a bathroom for the sharemilker’s men’s own use. His idea creates an atmosphere for the workmen, so that they will enjoy their work in pleasant and clean surroundings. The up-to-date paddock system of feeding and nearing the pigs was also appreciated. Cleanliness would appear to be the essence of all the appointments, making this a model farm.
