Children's Column

FOR YOUNG MATAMATA FOLK.

Motto for the Week : Know then thyself, presume not God to scan, The proper study of mankind is man. —Pope. Dear Girls and Boys,— The postman has had a little more work lately, hasn't he? It is much nicer for you to have each others letters to read, I think. Rene mentioned that she was going to ask her teacher, to let all the class write a letter to me. I do hope she does. I wonder if any of you others have teachers who might let their classes do the same? Would not the “ Tree ” be just covered with little new leaves ?

I just remembered about a skipping competition the teacher held at our school when I was in Standard 111. We used to skip and skip and skip; then one day, to our great delight, the teacher said he had bought prizes for the best skippers in each class. Standard VI. started, "the top girl skipping eight hundred and something. I might add the boys played hockey. I won in our class, and chose a lovely red autograph album. I was so proud of it, too. Some of the winners chose story books and chocolates. We finished the day with a glorious lollie scramble. Really our teacher was “ a brick.” The lady teacher, not to be left out, offered a prize for the neatest and best worked sewing sampler. I might add, I didn't win it, although I don’t think my work was the worst, or at least I hope not.

Well, my dears, I must hunt up some good books to tell you about next time, till then, my love. JILL.

A LIST OF THE BUDS. *•» Betty Lowe. Yvonne Hutchings. , Bonny O’Connor. Celia Blaker. Alfred Barlow. Pauline Bernstein. Rene Gifford.

; * MY RABBIT. (Original—P. Bernstein.) I have a little rabbit, His fur is white as snow; I sometimes let him run about To see how far he’ll go. He loyes to eat a thistle, Carrot, and lettuce, too; And if you gently whistle He’ll come running back to you. Although these winter days are cold And draughty, too —not half! I wouldn’t like my little rabbit Made into a scarf.
