“The User Should Pay.”

Matters of interest to Walton ratepayers were discussed at Monday's meeting of the Piako County Council.

■Cr. W. R. Lowry (Kiwitahi) explained that he had attended the meeting of Kiwitahi ratepayers at which a ratepayers’ association had been formed with a view to pressing for relief from the burden of rates. | An association had also been formed at Manawaru and meetings were to be held in the Tahuna and Morrinsville ridings. “ We should give our earnest support to the principle that the user of the road should pay,” added Cr. Lowry. “If a concentrated effort is made I am sure that we will get relief when Parliament meets again, but if we sit still we will get nothing.” He hoped councillors would give their support when meetings were called in their ridings. Price of Benzine. The engineer reported that the price the council was paying for benzine was practically bedrock. If the council had a benzine installation at the Waihou depot it would entail the employment of a storeman. There would also be loss from evaporation. ' Cr. W. H. Emett (Manawaru), who had called for a report at the previous meeting, said he was still of the opinion that it would be a cheaper proposition to install a bowser. As to evaporation, one dairy company found the loss was only one gallon in 400. He thought the council should call applications from various companies and get a cut price. s No action was taken.
