CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday, when the following members were present: Messrs. H. E. Schofield (chairman), A. Swinbourn, F. S. R. Crawford, C. Ingram, J. Flower, A. N. Crawford, H. Williams, H. Gear, L. Flower, A. E. Wrigley and G. G. Griffiths.

Motions of Sympathy.

Before the business of the meeting was proceeded with a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. A. Latham, who was secretary of the chamber. Mr. Schofield said that Mr. Latham’s work was a monument to his keenness and accuracy. Similar motions were passed to be conveyed to the relatives of the late Constable Connor and Mr. K. R. Buckley.

Justices of the Peace.

Mr. Griffiths stated that there was a shortage of Justices of the Peace in Matamata, and he suggested the chamber forward three or four names for consideration when the next batch of appointments were being made. After some discussion the chamber decided to forward the names of four residents to the Minister for his consideration. Picture Evening. The president reported that the social committee- had not met since last meeting, and in consequence nothing had been done in regard to the proposed evening to which wives of members were to be invited.

After discussing various ideas it was decided to hold a theatre party, to be followed by supper and dancing, members to be allowed to invite friends.
