ELECTRICITY FOR SOUTHLAND.
HARNESSING MOUNTAIN LAKE. For two years great works have been in hand in Scotland under the shadow of the Grampian Mountains, where Inverness marchee "Tith Perthshire, and a few weeks ago a touch of a switch inaugurated the £1,750,000 scheme for obtaining electric power from the waters of Loch Ericht. A height of 13 feet has been added to the waters of- this long and lovely lake, which lies 1000 feet above sea level.
■ Nearly three miles of tunnel have been cut out of the hills, and power houses have been erected with turbines of 40,000 horse-power. From these power houses the electricity is carried on cables to Abernethy for distribution over the east of Scotland. A thousand men have been employed on these great works, and an extension has been begun on a dam on the Tummel, the river that flows out of Loch Kinloch, and on power-house at Tummel Bridge, Parthshire. This . new scheme will be completed in two years.
