LADIES’ BEST ROOM.

SCHEME UNDER WAY. Meeting to be Called. * In drawing attention to a letter on, the subject of a rest room for Matamata signed by the chairman of the Town Board (Mr. J. Buchanan) himself, Mr. R. ‘W. Stevens that the question of a rest a He and were only birds of endeavouring to do what for the town while they were here.. A rest room should be an adjunct .to every progressive town, as it was of ' great importance to the business; community. Mr. Bell stated he thought the idea*, was an 1 excellent one. The towm should have had a rest room, and! would -have had one, had the Towni Board carried out the wishes of ratepayers. He, however, thought the question of site should be carefully considered beforehand. Mr. Stevens said there were thsfi© sites which had been discussed. These were in the Domain, by McL., Wallace’s and in Hetana street. Mr. Bell said there was another site, and that was near the present hall. If erected there the building would in time become part; of - the town hall buildings. Mr. Taylor thought it was a great catastrophe that the Beautifying Society should have to push the Town (• Board into such a movement as providing a rest room for the town. The ratepayers voted for a hall and now they would lose £BOO revenue through the action of the Town Board, and the next board to assume •office would have to raise the ratea by that amount. The action of the Town Board in regard to the hall question had hit him more than anything else - since he had been in Matamata. He had stated that the board should build and protect its revenue, but had been laughed at at that time. Now ratepayers saw that they were being robbed of their fit. Had the board acted as it should have done the town would have had a rest room by now. Mr. G. G. Bell agreed, and stated that years ago the ratepayers carried a loan scheme and gave a definite and distinct mandate to the'board to build a town hall. Yet the members of the board had deliberately flouted the-wishes of the ratepayers. Mr. Stevens suggested they were perhaps getting away from the subject. (Laughter). He stated the proposed public meeting was to consider ways and means of raising the money ' and settling the site. Every society and club in the town had been written to, and the public was also invited. He was not quite sure what the outcome would be, but thought a committee might be set up to carry on. Personally, he favoured the Hetana street site, but was easy on the matter. Mr. Griffiths thought it dangerous J, to approach a public meeting without a more or less definite scheme. The Beautifying Society had borne the brunt of the spade work, and should carry on. He favoured the society retaining control with a public committee assisting. Many promising schemes had been wrecked by allowing a catch-vote at a public meeting. It was then decided, on the motion of Messrs. Bell and Wrigley, that Messrs. Taylor, Schofield and Griffiths and Flower, represent 4he Chamber at the public meeting to be held to consider ways and means of raising money for the rest room.
