CONTROL OF TRAFFIC.

COUNTIES TO COMBINE. Four Inspectors Proposed. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Piako County Council it was decided to apagree to the scheme approved by several adjoining local bodies to group the Waikato, Waipa, Matamata, Piako and Raglan counties together for purposes of traffic control. It is hoped to have the scheme in 'running order by April 1. The main points of the scheme are as follow: — Hamilton is to be the head office for the traffic inspectors, but the inspectors may reside in outside districts. One chief inspector and three assistant inspectors are to be appointed. The chief inspector is to be paid £7 per week and the assistant inspectors £6 per week. Each inspector is to provide his own motor car. Motor spirit, lubricating oil and tyres are to be provided by the combined group,. The control of the inspectors is to

be under an executive Committee consisting of the chairman of each of the six counties in the group. If the group was found to be acceptable to the local authorities -and ygLs the Main Highways Board the latter would find £1 for £l. The Piako County Council would have to Ipro-' vide 15 per cent, of the expenses, of r the scheme. The chairman, Cr. W. R. Lowry,, said the question/ was whether the: council was to continue with its 'own. inspector or whether it was, to joim the other counties in. the grouping scheme. Cr. Stark said that with the £ for £ subsidy from the Highways Board the council would have to pay only £l5O a year. There was no doubt that Mr. Russell had done a great amount of good by patrolling, the roads throughout the summer. However, under the grouping scheme the county would benefit from the financial assistance of the Highways Board. By joining up with the five ... other counties in South Auckland they would form a strong body to protect the interests of counties. On the motion of the chairman and Cr.
