THE MATAMATA RECORD, MONDAY, MARCH 10, 1930. THE SHOW.

MEMBERS of the Matamata A. and P. Association, especially the president, secretary and executive, have reason to congratulate themselves on the successful resuscitation of the annual *show after a lapse. The district is fortunate in having such a zealous band of officials, whose wholehearted work has resulted in two outstanding shows in succession, following a period during which the outlook looked black indeed and when many had given up hope of ever seeing this annual fixture again placed on a sound footing. *

Now that success has been achieved, the committee, instead of resting on its laurels, wisely tabulated what were regarded as weak points in their latest effort and placed them on record, while fresh in members’ minds. Finance, lay-out, display, entries and the schedule were all discussed in turn, and the suggestions noted must prove valuable when preparations are bing made for -next year’s fixture. Not the least valuable suggestion was that of the president, who on two occasions referred to winter work. In the past far too much has been left to the last few weeks, with the result that no matter how greatly the desire to accomplish actuated members, something had. to be rushed owing to lack of time. With careful organisation, much can be done during winter time which will ensure not only smoother working round about the show period but also a greater degree of perfection in regard to detail.

A pleasing feature introduced into the discussion at the recent meeting was the determination to aim high; to aim for a better and bigger and more complete show, with two days, if necessary, which in the president’s words, “ would be as good as any country show in New Zealand.’’ Even the remark made about a future Royal Show is no idle boast provided the present will to achieve is maintained. The district within six and a-half miles of the Matamata post office now contains four dairy factories, the production from which totals a million pounds sterling annually, and when it is realised that there is easily room for more than ten times the present settlement some slight idea of future prospects may be gained. From a climatic and soil point of view the Matamata district is singularly favoured, and the time is fast approaching when the Upper Waikato from Tokoroa to Morrinsviffe will be world-famous for its production. With these facts in mind there should be no hesitation in going boldly ahead, and now that the ball has been set rolling towards a definite objective, there is little likelihood of its ” momentum being impeded, so long as the present enthusiastic executive stand by a president to whom the district owes much in regard to A. and P. matters.
