TE POI CLUB. Opening of the Season. Saturday, October 6, saw the opening of the Te Poi tennis season at the local club grounds. In spite of the numerous counterattractions there was a very large attendance, and the function was a pronounced success. The grounds now comprise three courts which are kept in fine condition, though perhaps a trifle soft after the recent heavy , rain; and, 'MeeigSß- T to say, they were a scene of animation from start to finish. Mr! H. Oliver, the club’s chairman, called on Mr. J. J. Bell to open the courts;, which he did in a few appropriate words. He thanked the members of the •- club , for the honour offered to him in his election as president, and he congratulated the club on its steady advancement and very sound financial position. There were very few clubs so successful and prosperous as the Te Poi Tennis Club, and he was very proud to be its president. He called on Mrs. W. Settle to play the first ball, which ceremony having been neatly performed, Mr. Bell declared the courts open for P lay - , , . Afternoon tea was then served m the usual excellent Te Poi style, and brisk play ensued for the rest of the day. . At the recent annual meeting of the Tennis Club the following officers were elected: President, Mr. J. J* Bell; chairman, Mr. 11. Oliver; hon. secretary,.Mr. H. Stevens; committe* Messrs. F. Lansdown, A. Lansdown, R. Wright, H. Catlin, J. Dawson, Misses P. D. Hill and M. Sullivan. An eight-gallon hot water service has been installed, rendering the preparation of afternoon tea a pleasure instead of a drudgery. The finances of the club are excellent, there being a large credit balance after last year’s season.
