A LUCKY RAFFLE.

How the winning of five turkeys in a raffle resulted in a Canadian woman becoming a champion turkeyraiser is related by a Calgary correspondent of the Newcastle Chronicle. Mrs M. A. Freeman, .of Beau Desire Ranch, Ardenode, near Calgary, was awarded the birds in a prize draw nine years ago, and decided to breed her prizes commercially. From this small beginning, by perseverence and hard work, she had, at; the end of last year, 200 birds to sell as foundation stock for flocks, 500 to sell for the table, and 100 to replenish her own flock for this year. The market for her birds is steady and dependable, and she is expecting to receive at least £6OO for her “bronzes” this year. This is an admirable example, not only of what may be done,' bto also of what is being done by the woman poultry farmer in Canada. Wives of British immigrants demote much of their time, while their husbands a!re working for neighbouring farmers, to poultry fanning, thereby gaining usefnl experience and substantial increases in capital for the future development of the homestead. There is the instance of the Throssell family, which went to Canada from the Midlands nearly two years ago. Mr and Mrs Throssell and their fpur children went out under the 3,000 families scheme and took a farm at Langley Prairie, in the«. Lower Fraser Valley, British Columbia. The head of the family is a turkey expert, and how has 65 pedigree birds for which there is an excellent market. Mrs Throssell has into the spirit of the family’s neW venture, and has a flock of 250 White Leghorns, which she tends and feeds hprself. ‘ -
