BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
ONCE? Upon a time there was, we are told, a beautifying society in Matamata, but for reasons that we are not told it just petered out without doing anything : the hfiountain was in labour, but did not produce even the small mouse of the’ fable. However, there is no reason why another society should not now be formd, when the time is possibly more; 6pportune ; no doubt those whose good intentions caused them to initiate the hrst body would be willing to support a new* one. A decade ago the conditions were decidedly against beautification, owing to mud roads being the rule,'though to be sure any trees or shrubs planted then would be
of value now., To-day we have sealed
surfaces in part’ of the main streets, a goodly total -length of concrete paths, and contracts let for further roading improvements. The centre of the double track in Tower road will require beautification in accordance with the scheme under which the £20,000 roading loan was raised. Although there is no loan money available for that purpose, yet no valid reason- exists to prevent, the Matamata Town Board from contributing something out of revenue , in fact, unless the board approves and fathers the society its formation, will be almost useless. There is also the railway plantation as a very excellent field of operations : it does not need much imagination to visualise the beautification that could be effected t iere, and other places wopld follow for treatment. . ' i , The matter may well be considered by the Town Board with a view to action being taken, preferably starting with a public meeting.
