53 MILES FOR PIAKO,
Recommendations to Board.
The members of the District High-
ways Council No. 2 met on Thursday,' to consider the declaration of addi-*
onal main highways in the area,
consequent on the levying of the
petrol tax by the Government. The> imposition of this tax will enable the board to extend the mileage by 50per cent., and to that end the council recommended that a total of 292. miles of road should be declared main highways. Included in the list were: the following:—
Matamata County.-—l, Ngatea— Morrinsville-Waharoa ; 2, Cambridge— Tauranga ; 3, Te Aroha-Waharoa, via» Stanley, Alexander and .Wardville; roads.
Piako County.—l, Ngatea-Morrins-ville-Waharoa ; 2, Tahuna-Ohinewai road; 3, Te Aroha-Waharoa, via Stanley, Alexander and Wardville roads. ° , The recommendations made on behalf of the Piako County Council : were commented on this morning by the chairman, Mr. W. R. Lowry, who represented the council at the 1 meeting. The Ngatea-Morrinsville-"W aharoa road ran through Pate— • tonga, Tahuna, Morrinsville, Kiwitahi . [and Walton and joined’ the main’., | highway at Waharoaf The most I important portion was the Kiwitahi - and Walton roads, while the Tahuna, road, .which had been a drag on the* ratepayers for many years, would, benefit materially if the recommendation was approved. The Tahuna--I Ohinewai road included the stretch through Te Hoe, which was gaining I. in importance as a route to Auckland. “If these recommendations are approved,” said Mr. Lowry, “ weI vull have 53 miles of additional mam highway. At present we have only 22 miles. The Piako county hhs received generous treatment from thecouncil.”
