A COUNTY SUPERVISOR.

(To the. Editor.) Sir,—ln reading an account of the meeting of the Matamata County Council, 1 noticed that one of the councillors suggested appointing their bridge carpenter to supervise work at a salary of £3OO per year. As a ratepayer for many years, I join with many others in entering a protest to this. We do not require a supervisor when we have our worthy engineer, who, 1 understand, has a good stall whom he can depend on to carry out work according to his instructions. To appoint a man with very little service with this council, to dictate to our present foreman, would be a direct insult, and probably cause trouble. What we contend is, that the engineer requires a draughtsman to carry out the office work, and thus relieve the engineer of much work. 1 would like to ask the member for To. Poi il ho is prepared to give our present stall an increase in wages so as to put them on an equal footing with othci local bodies. 1 think this would fill the bill better than giving £3OO per annum for a supervisor. 1 would like to point out that it is not the supervisor who carries out the work, but the foreman and men who have to camp out in all weathers, very olton being to cook their food in wet weather; also sleeping in wet blankets through tents leaking. Trusting that some abler pen than mine will take this matter up, yours faithfully,’ RATEPAYER.
