WORK IN MATAMATA COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. At the last meeting of the Matamata County Council the Engineer submitted the following report:— In the Matamata riding Mahood is engaged on grader work on the Turangaomoana road, which by now should be completed. He has then been instructed to proceed to the Tui road and Okauia. After that I propose sending him to Waharoa and the Peria roads. On the Wardville to Waharoa road considerable damage is being done by motor lorries hauling heavy loads of milk over the metal. T ordered concrete pipes to replace the wood culvert at the riding boundary on the Matamata to Tirau road, and I shall get them put in as soon as our bridge foreman is at liberty. Repairs to bridges in the riding have been completed in a satisfactory manner, and the foreman has given me a detailed report on all the bridges, which shows all except four to be in a good state of repair. The first of these is on the Pukatutu. road, and requires to be renewed as soon as possible, as it is not safe. On the Hot Springs bridge three understruts and one pile require renewing. The Mangamahu bridge requires to be renewed at an early date. The Wairero bridge on the Piako boundary is in a dangerous condition, and should be replaced by a new structure at once, or completely closed to traffic.

Tn the Patctere riding Gardner and Kcnhiar have completed their contract on the Tirau-Cambridgc road in a satisfactory manner. In the present state of the labour market, these men are too good to be allowed to leave (his district, so in order to prevent this, I let them a contract to sand and gravel a mile and a quarter on the Putaruru road (from the junction to Sweeney's) in order to find them employment until sufficient metal is to hand to enable me to start them carting from Hinuera station. I also let them a contract for filling the road near Watson's bridge, and also blinding metal on the same road. I have completed the preliminary engineering survey of Tyler's deviation, and have obtained a grade of one in twenty on each side of Mangaroa stream, and Halsc has completed the survey, also of Stopford's deviation, and the extra land required for road at the Hinuera station.
