. TENNIS CLUB MEETING. A - meeting of the Grounds Committee of the Putaruru Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club was hold on Saturday, November fith. The members present were: Mr. W. Parker (in tho chair), Mrs. Ibbotson, Miss Alcorn, and Messrs. H. W. J. Scott, W. P. Roberts, L. M. Nichlin, J. R. O. Lochhead, and H. Poavse, The chairman welcomed Mr. Pearse on his taking his seat as a member of the committee for the first time, and in reply, Mr. Pearse expressed his willingness to do everything possible to forward the club’s interests. A donation of £2 towards the funds of the club was received from Mr. and Mrs. Proctor, for which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded them. Three new lady members were elected, two for croquet and one for tennis. A report oil the ball held recently by the club was presented, and it intimated that the club’s funds should benefit to the extent of about £2O as the result of the function. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded all those who had sold tickets for flic ball, particularly Mrs. Ibbotson, Mrs. Middleton, and Miss Alcorn, who, it was reported, had made very big sales. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded tho secretary for her splendid organisation of the ball, ami for the tremendous amount of work done by her to make the occasion such a huge success. Each member of the committee expressed personal appreciation of her services, and the motion was carried enthusiastically. Messrs. Lochhead and Nichlin reported that they had inspected the club’s grounds and found the new grass was growing well, as were all except two of the trees comprising the recently planted hedge there. Tt was decided to take steps to get a roller to roll the grounds. Mr. Scott was asked to ascertain the price of wirenetting for the tennis courts, and Messrs. Lochhcad#ind Roberts were deputed to ascertain the club’s requirements in gear for playing tennis, etc. Mr. Roberts reported that a net in good order, belonging to the previous tennis club, and two standards were ready for delivery. Some discussion took place as to the possibility of playing on the grass courts about Christmas time, and the opinion was expressed that if the grass was raised up by forks and well rolled, i< should be fit for play by then, both for tennis and croquet. Steps were taken to ascertain whether a contract could be obtained for putting down an asphalt tennis court.

The erection of a large, new, up-to-date shop premises for Mr. J. C. Tomalin, proprietor of the Progressive Shoe and Saddlery Store, Puta,vuru, has now been commenced. The ■building is being erected on Mr Tomalin’s property in the block between tho hotel comer and the school, Putarn ru, and,.it is hoped to liave it completed by Christmas. The Putaruru Lodge of Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) was visited on Wednesday evening by Mr J. McLeod, corresponding secretary of the. Order for the Auckland district, and the occasion was celebrated by a public social in tho Putaruru Hall. The attendance \was fairly large, and included about ten visitors from 1 lie Matamata Lodge of Oddfellows. Dancing was indulged in, and a happy time spent. Also during tho evening Mr. McLeod gave an address on I lie aims and objects of the Order, and the advantages of membership thor-vn. For the dances the musicians were Mrs. Treloar (pianiste), Mr. J. Kimber (cornet-player), and Mr. 11. Sayers (violinist), while Bro. G. L. Marlin was the M.C. Material assistance with the supper arrangements was rendered by Mrs. 11, McLeod.

A big effort is being made in Rotorua to raise £7OOO for a Avar memorial, and with that end in view, a campaign is being organised. It is proposed to hold a carnival in the Rotorua Domain, half the proceeds to go to the war memorial, and the other half to -4he Salvation Army Boys’ Training Farm at Putaruru. Arrangements arc well in hand to make the event one of the largest in the history of Rotorua. A rather serious accident befell Mrs Walker, of Maraetai, on Thursday of last week. She Avas driving in a gig at Waotu, Avhen she Avas thrown out of the vehicle, with the result that both bones of one forearm were broken, while her other hand was also injured somewhat. She also sustained slight concussion. She Avas taken to Mr. Schutc’s residence, Waotu, Avhere every assistance Avas given by local residents until the arrival of Dr. J. Perrette Millington, from Putaruru, who rendered the medical attention necessary. The patient, who is an elderly woman, is still confined to bed.
