THE town board election takes place next month, when the Matamata board will then have held office but fourteen months. During tljat time it has been practically unable to obtain funds, owing to the rate for last year having already been struck by the county, and the rate-book not being available till late this year. Despite this great handicap the board has done good administrative and organising work, and has made preparations for many improvements in the near future. A new town board always has considerable difficulties to contend with in its first term, and in many cases some years elapse before a smooth running is obtained. It says much for the Matamata board that they, if returned, will be able to go straight ahead with progressive schemes which will bring the town at least into line with older established places. The chairman of the local board, Mr J. Price, is especially deserving of the thanks of the community, for his unselfish devotion to his task. Mr Price knew what he was up against when he took the office of chairman, and since then he has devoted more than half his time to town board matters. Pie has been surveyor, engineer, and somptimes—in cases of urgency — workman to the board for fourteen months, and as a reward should certainly be allowed to see the contemplated schemes put through. The board has worked amicably, and has generally shown a keen desire to make Matamata a town to be proud of. It has been hampered as has already been said, but the desire was there, and the object will be attained. We expect to see a majority of the members of the board returned to sit for a further two years.
