PERIA QUEEN.
Card Party and Dance. The; Matamata Queen carnival opened on Monday, the first public function being a card party and dance held in support of the Peria soldiers' queen in the town hall. The weatrnr was very bad all day and evening, and consequently the attendance was affected. This was indeed a pity for arrangements had been made for a very large attendance. However, the number was not reduced to the extent one would expect, and the function resulted in a profit. Considerable business was done in connection with the sale of badges. The stage was nicely set out for card players, while dancers were treated to most excellent music played by Mr and Mrs Darby and Mr J. Cumming. Songs were rendered by Messrs Pannett and Lamb. Similar social functions will be held throughout the campaign.
